Building Information Modeling

BIM for Infrastructure

March 2, 2016 by Prota

Building Information Modeling (BIM) usage is rapidly growing for vertical buildings. Its’ usage for infrastructure projects is one of the fast growing concepts today. The companies which experienced BIM for their vertical building projects have gained high return on investment (ROI). The high ROI rate of vertical projects effected BIM adoption of infrastructure companies.

McGraw-Hill Construction published an investigation which conducted for infrastructure projects in Business Value of BIM Smart Market Report in 2012. The report shows that almost half (46%) of the firms report using BIM on their infrastructure projects, up from 27% two years ago. Report also says that “67% of all users report a positive ROI on their BIM investments, even higher than the 63% of BIM users for buildings who reported the same in 2009”.

BIM usage is preferred especially for large scale projects such as airports, road and highway projects, energy projects and water facilities etc. In Turkey, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality-Department of Rail Systems has started to tender the metroline projects by condition of deliver BIM. It is possible find some example metroline studies with BIM in the world. Crossrail in London is one of them. The direct BIM benefits are defined for the project like reduced wastage, improved efficiencies, faster collaboration, reduced information loss, better visualization, more accurate results, and collaborative model transfer from designer to contractor. (Lake Constance 5D-Conference 20123)

BIM is used in several projects, such as underground subway station planning simulation in China. FaTou station of one metro line no.7 in Beijing is an example to analyze application of BIM technology. To get an optimal solution at the planning stage, BIM was used. (Pu H.,Wei Q., BIM Technology Used in Underground Subway Station Planning Simulation, 2014)

Prota is carrying on its longstanding metro design experience to the BIM platform. Prota develops the designs in all stages with BIM, from conceptual design to record modeling.  Terrain, stations, tunnels are created as 3D models and the structures are coordinated with MEP systems with BIM technology.
